Meditation

Types of meditation:

- focused on the breath - following each inhale and exhale
- mindfulness or attentiveness meditation - focusing on the present moment, observing emotions, thoughts, physical sensations
- transcendental or using mantras *** Mantras are not religious songs, but a set of syllables, formulas or sounds in different intonation. They are sung aloud to produce a vibratory effect, and this, together with a given sound, affects different parts of the body and different lobes of the brain. Through this they have a “healing” effect.
- Zen meditation - focusing on nothing, the so-called emptiness in the head but with simultaneous awareness of everything. Self-observation and experiencing the moment. (In my opinion, the hardest to do especially if you are starting the adventure with meditation)
- Metta meditation - love and compassion - sending positive thoughts and wishes for yourself, loved ones and even people who annoy you
- Vipassana - developing awareness and understanding of your nature and the reality around you
- movement meditation - yoga, tai chi, qigong
- guided meditations

Mindfulness meditation is the most popular tool used in the context of cognitive-behavioral therapy and the most effective, certified by numerous clinical studies.

If you are just delving into the subject of meditation and would like to have the experience, then I would suggest to start with guided meditation, meaning the instructor tells you step by step what to do. It is then easiest to let go and feel relaxed, go deep within yourself and experience something unusual up to that point. A well guided meditation gives you an unbelievable inner experience.

If you need or would like to check if that practice is for you, I have available spots for guided meditation.

A lot of misconceptions have grown up around this concept, making people afraid to even try this technique because meditation comes from India (where there are many religions like Hinduism or Buddhism, so many people think it is somehow related and don't want to “betray” their own religion).

However, it is a separate part of life practice. It can be used in conjunction with religion - theoretically we Christians also use the same principles when praying without even knowing it, but it is not at all a commitment to go into another stream, cult or religion.

Meditation is often combined with Yoga (more specifically, asanas - postures) and Pranayama - breathing techniques.
Each of these things, whether together or separately, helps in its own way to get through each day.
For example, some yoga postures relax muscles and tendons reducing the sensation of physical pain. Proper breathing relieves muscle tension or can provide a boost of energy. And quieting the mind allows you to relax mentally and see a broader perspective on a topic or problem.

So what is meditation all about?

Colloquially speaking, it is an exercise - focussing one's attention, calming the mind and along with that, feeling relaxed or achieving a state of awareness. (Not to be confused with enlightenment... it's not the same thing).
There are many different techniques and ways that can be tailored to suit yourself and your specific need at the time, but all seek to develop the ability to observe one's thoughts, emotions and body without judging or engaging with them.
